Born in Aberdare, Wales, 1943. Educated at the University of London and the Royal College of Art. Appointed Head of Fine Art, Curtin University, Western Australia, 1983. John was awarded a fellowship by the Australia Council, 1988. 

Since the mid-1990s, having exhibited in London, Madrid, Lisbon, Porto, New York, Chicago, New Delhi, Auckland, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, John Beard’s paintings have been exploring the fugitive nature of reality.

More recently, while living in Sintra on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, Beard made the ‘Adraga’ series of paintings which were studies of a massive off-shore rock which constantly changed its character in the surging sea and shifting light.
